Environmental Labeling : Stakeholder Meeting Highlight

The objective of environmental labeling for clothing is to give consumers transparent access to the environmental impacts of each product they choose, thereby encouraging more informed decisions. Find below the key points adressed during the 21th May meeting of the methodological consultation stakeholder committee.

  • Lagoped & Lou: The first brands to implement environmental labeling

  • Physical Durability: Currently not part of framework V1 but expected to be added in a few months.
  • Non-Physical Durability: Will be included in V1, calculated based on a single sales channel and distinctions across multiple ranges.
  • Raw Materials: Data completion is ongoing and is crucial for accurate calculations, particularly for items like bras.
  • Database: Empreinte Database (Ecoinvent) is in use, offering 50 LCI options for Raw Materials and Processes.
  • New Product Categories: Additional categories are forthcoming, with stakeholder proposals being considered for default settings.
  • Form Updates: Enhancements have been made to accommodate trims and multi-component items (e.g., jackets, bras).

Regulatory Framework

  • Decree: Includes framework order covering database, methodological notice, declaration portal, and graphic display format.
  • Levels: Parameters are categorized as mandatory or optional, with Level 2 requiring verification; default values are also provided.
  • Score: Both Private Scores and Environmental Cost are accounted for.
  • Label Display: The framework is considered at the time of display (Versioning) for verification.
  • Database: The Base Empreinte (Ecoinvent + Incorporates external contributions like Woolmark and French wool)

  • Complete Framework: Notification by the end of July, publication of texts before 2024
  • Second Phase of Consultation: Infra-regulatory until June.

  • Comparison Scale: To be provided by category
  • Mandatory Display: Once the voluntary phase is sufficiently mature (1/2 years)
  • Feedback Points: More detailed and disaggregated database, more materials.
Durability: Must include both physical and emotional durability, not just emotional durability in the short term.
