New In: Pioneering the French Score Integration

Discover how Peftrust is charting new paths for sustainable fashion

To keep pace in the ever-evolving realm of environmental sustainability, staying ahead of regulatory shifts is key. At Peftrust, we pride ourselves on not just keeping pace but leading the way. Since March 2024, we’ve been pioneering a big leap toward within textile sustainability: Adding the French Scores to the impact assesments within the Peftrust platform. Known as “Coût Environnemental,” or “Environmental Cost,” this addition to our platform reflects the environmental assessment of impacts according to the French State method—more details below. While the public unveiling of this score only occurred recently, our clients have been reaping its benefits for more months now, affording them a significant edge in reaching their sustainability goals. It is the case of Lagoped, who recently published the French Score on its entire collection.

The French Score, a result of collaborative efforts between France’s Ministry of Ecological Transition and ADEME, is a cornerstone of the Climate and Resilience Law. This method is grounded in the European PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) framework and incorporates additional factors previously not entirely taken into account by life cycle analyses.

What does Environmental Cost Mean?

Similar to how a product’s price indicates the “financial cost” of products, the environmental display aims to represent the “environmental cost” or “cost to the planet.” Measured in impact points, a higher score signifies a more significant environmental impact, enables consumers to make informed choices and promotes sustainable practices. Incorporating the French Score now is key strategic move, not just for compliance, but for futureproofing your brand in this increasing conscious industry.

Seizing the Competitive Edge: Adopt Green Solutions Now

In fact, why adopt this innovation now instead of waiting for it to become mandatory? First, because early integration into your business processes makes future adjustments more manageable. By investing in it over time you can avoid sudden, large-scale adjustments later, allowing strategic resource allocation. Additionally, featuring the “Coût Environnemental” of your products can quickly give your brand a competitive advantage, especially if they have strong carbon performance. You will be able to capitalize on this aspect more quickly and gain market share.

Lastly, cost efficiency is crucial. Embracing environmental assessment tools now offers competitive pricing for support and implementation. Delaying until regulatory obligations arises risks inflated costs, straining budgets and resources. This is why we believe that the integration of environmental assessment processes is not just advisable but necessary to stay ahead.

Integrating the French Score: Enhancing Sustainability Metrics

Incorporating the French Score into our algorithms demonstrates our commitment to providing accurate assessments, helping fashion brands align with sustainable values.

The French Government itself has acknowledged the inadequacy of solely assessing carbon impact when evaluating environmental impact comprehensively, and the need to consider a few more criteria. As a result, we have expanded our environmental impact categories beyond the 16 PEF indicators that we already offer to our customers, to include two new French-specific categories.

Two French Additional Impact Indicators

The first addition concerns End-of-Life (EOL) Exports Outside Europe. While standards encourage local disposal, reuse or recycling of clothing, many garments are exported to countries lacking waste management systems. This supplement accounts for the impact of disposed clothing outside Europe.

The second focus is Microfiber Release, an increasing environmental concern looking at the release during textile product lifecycles, factoring in fiber type and production processes.

Accounting for Non Physical & Physical Durability

Finally, we also integrate Emotional Durability in the calculations. According to the French Environnmental Labeling Framework for Clothing, Durability has two dimensions: physical and non-physical, which considers two criteria: repairability and emotional durability. Each criteria is assigned a multiplier value that changes how a product’s impact is calculated, and the French score can’t be accurately calculated without it. And it doesn’t stop there: The durability multipliers even help distinguish between a fast fashion item and a sustainable garment that is build to stand the test of time.

Curious about Durability? Stay tuned for our next blog post where we will dive deeper into durability, the multiplers, and why is necessary for your impact assesments.

What Sets Emotional Durability Apart

Non-physical Durability is a multifaceted metric that evaluates five factors contributing to the longevity of a product: traceability display, raw materials, commercialization duration, range breadth, and repair incentives. Integrating this aspect offers a holistic view of product sustainability, crucial for accurate assessments. Overlooking durability can lead to erroneous scores and misleading comparisons, where synthetic fibers may appear more favorable than natural fibers. Prioritizing durability also reduces environmental impact, waste, and resource consumption. This proactive approach ensures regulatory compliance and eventually translates into higher prices, lower costs, and enhanced brand loyalty.

Maximizing your Brand’s Advantage

Peftrust’s distinction lies not only in adapting to regulations but in proactively integrating them into our platform. Yet, the true protagonist here is you. While competitors may eventually catch up, your brand can confidently stride ahead as a pioneer, leveraging our platform to establish itself as an industry leader in environmental sustainability. Our platform accommodates diverse regulations frameworks, lifecycle stages and impacts across the fashion value chain. Regulatory fulfillment isn’t a hurdle for us, but rather an inherent feature that we know directly benefits your brand’s interests.

We also believe that success in today’s market extends beyond regulatory adherence: it’s about standing out amidst competition. While government-provided tools like Ecobalyse offer primary assistance, we offer a competitive edge as we provide unparalleled depth and granularity in our platform’s environmental assessments. Ecobalyse may serve its purpose for basic calculations, yet our platform provides a comprehensive suite of tools and data sources that ensure precise calculations for even the most complex fabrics and supply chain specificities.

Moreover, transparency and accountability are foundational pillars of our methodology. Your brand can rest assured knowing that our rigorous methodology ensures the highest standards of accuracy and reliability. Peftrust subjects its methodology to rigorous scrutiny, undergoing biannual reviews to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and reliability. Trust isn’t just earned, it’s cultivated, and we are committed to cultivating it with your brand.
